Implementation

Here's some ideas for implementation...

This page has 2 sections: housing and goals.

Housing/Ways to build a community:

There are several ways to go about implementing the vision of our own matriarchal ecovillage/community in the southeastern U.S.

Option #1: Create an Eco-village from scratch.
This means starting our own, finding the right location, enough members, financing, etc.

  • We'd build a new community using alternative construction such as natural home building (Strawbale; Clay / Straw; Cob (Earth), adobe, etc.). Permaculture design consultants on this could include the company called "Patterns for Abundance"
  • or we'd build using modern construction techniques but with conservation in mind. (design consultants/builders on this could include the firm called Village Habitat Design (See a video of one of the communities they planned shown on the bottom of our Vision page)

Option #2: Create our own community/neighborhood inside of an existing Eco-village.
This means becoming a small section of an existing community, then building natural homes (such as cob) with the help and expertise of current residents, and learning the ways the existing members survive and thrive. Basically learning from the natives. The first step in this option would be to learn about different eco-villages and visit them.

  • We could try to have our own space inside of an existing feminist ecovillage. An example would be to have our own neighborhood inside of Earthaven EcoVillage
  • And then use their construction crew called 'Earthaven Forestry Cooperative' to build our alternative natural homes.
  • Or we could learn to build our own natural homes by taking workshops (see resources page for classes) or by reading books on natural home building techniques (some books are below)

These three books and others are available here for purchase

Option #3: Buy Existing Housing
(this would be to create a matriarchal community but not necessarily a true eco-village)

  • Buy or rent several houses on the same block and share backyards; Turn one into a community building
  • Buy or rent a large house and turn some of its rooms into common areas
  • Rent apartments in an apartment building; Turn one apartment into shared common community space
  • Buy an apartment building (or buy several housing units in a planned comunity, condominium or housing co-op) and do the same.
  • Buy land with an existing house or houses and turn it into housing and common areas.
  • Buy a castle or large estate and turn it into its own matriarchal community.
  • Or buy a former conference center or camp and do the same.
  • Buy an existing farm or ranch that already has a home and privacy and start there.

Our Goals:

Immediate goals:

1) To recruit a core group of roughly 10 women who are very interested and serious about living in our future matriarchal ecovillage and who want to help. And as many serious males as we can find, preferably with skills that could be useful to us and who believe in loving Female-led relationships.

  • To advertise. Place ads, write articles, post our website link on other websites, network with others on the internet, etc.
  • To find likeminded people who get along and who are peaceful and who believe in the lifestyle of loving Female-led relationships or matriarchy.

2) To secure a total of $500,000 in private funding for land or else be given land. Also look for grants. Visit the "take action" page to donate to our ecovillage.

3) To decide and implement a legal structure.

4) To decide and implement written agreements concerning legal status, bylaws, healthy communication, ways of keeping community members accountable and ways for admitting new members.

  • We need to learn what did or did not work for other existing ecovillages. This could be from books, talking to people and/or visiting intentional communities.
  • To look at others' bylaws and edit them to make our own.

5) To buy 50 to 200 acres in a warm climate (southeastern US), preferably with at least one home on it, privacy and within an hour driving distance to a good sized city for jobs while we get started.

  • Research different locations around the country
  • To find land or a land trust to base the community on

Medium range goals:

1) To build more residences and common buildings after we move to the land.

2) To purchase some farming and gardening equipment, alternative energy equipment and also to plant crops and fruit trees for food. Also plant flowers.

3) To harvest these crops as appropriate, and prepare organic food on a daily basis.

4) To create community businesses to help sustain ourselves and the ecovillage.

Long range goals:

1) To recruit new people every year that are right for our community.

2) To create a community of 50-100 people.

3) To engage in creative activities, have fun, be healthy, engage in activities to foster a close knit community feel, to do outreach, feel connected to each other and the world, and sustain ourselves.

4) To create more matriarchal communities or inspire others.
